Automation, biometrics, blockchain and quantum computing will be among the technologies having the greatest impact on a variety of organizations across several industries, says a new report from CompTIA.

10 top technology trends to watch in 2019

The newest member community established by CompTIA, the leading trade association for the global technology industry, is encouraging the adoption of new and emerging technologies to improve business outcomes, but in a rational and thoughtful way that makes sense for technology companies and their customers.

"These 10 technologies were stack-ranked by partners who are engaging with customers and finding interesting niches in the market,” says Jay McBain, principal analyst, for global channels at Forrester Research and vice chairman of the CompTIA Emerging Technology Community.

Impacting business opportunities and customer experiences

“It’s an exciting time for innovation on many fronts,” said Estelle Johannes, CompTIA’s staff liaison to the Emerging Technology Community. “The challenge for many organizations is to separate hype from reality, and to identify those new technologies that make the most sense for them.” Among the innovations generating a buzz in 2018, community leaders have identified 10 with the potential to make the greatest immediate impact and to create business opportunities for IT channel companies. Here are the 10 trends they identified.

Internet of Things

"The network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators and connectivity, which enables these objects to connect and exchange data."

Automation

"The technology by which a process or procedure is performed without human assistance."

Artificial intelligence

"Also known as machine intelligence, AI is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals."

Augmented reality or virtual reality

"Augmented reality is a direct or indirect live view of a physical, real-world environment. Virtual reality is a compute-generated scenario that simulates a realistic experience."

5G wireless

"Fifth generation wireless systems, abbreviated 5G, are improved wireless network technologies deploying in 2018 and later."

3D printing

"The process by which material is joined or solidified under computer control to create a three-dimensional object, with material being added together, such as liquid molecules or power grains being fused together."

Drones

"Unmanned crafts that have a host of applications."

Biometrics

"Also known as realistic authentication, biometrics is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control."

Blockchain

"A continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography."

Quantum computing

"Computing using quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement."
